Flex32 Soundmodem Troubleshooting

by Charles Brabham N5PVL

If the Flex32 soundmodem has any problem in setup, it almost always shows up at the end of the installation, when the user attempts to use the Scope function. That is the critical place to test your installation.

Things to Try

The first thing to try is the different settings offered in the drop-down menus for the Output and Input drivers shown below. Usually there are two or three choices. Be sure your input and output choices match.

If that doesn't help your options are narrowed, but all hope is not lost.

Try downloading the Soundmodem driver package again. Be sure that you have the latest version. This saved an installation for me once... I had been trying to install an older, less compatible version of Soundmodem. When I tried a fresh download, the newer version worked just fine!

Theoretically, if your soundcard works with Windows it should work with Flex32... In my experience, this is not always true. More than once I have been able to get a computer to work well with Flex32 by going over to a SoundBlaster compatible soundcard, preferably one manufactured by SoundBlaster themselves. A good unit to buy new would be the inexpensive PCI-bus 16-bit SoundBlaster. Old ISA bus Soundblaster 16's and Pro's work too.

If you can't change the soundcard, things begin to look grim... You are reduced to fiddling around with your soundcard's drivers and options, not always a good way to go if it's been working fine otherwise.

If all of the above fails, it's time to start looking for a new computer. - Never give up!

Good luck!    Charles Brabham, N5PVL
